From the Collection:

The collection consists of photographs taken between 1882 and 1953 of various exterior locations primarily in Orange County, California, including Santa Ana, Tustin, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Garden Grove, Orange, San Juan Capistrano, San Juan Hot Springs, and Irvine. There are also photographs of Catalina Island and Riverside. More than half of the photographs date to the period prior to 1900. The collection includes in most cases the glass plate or film negatives used to create the prints.

Company L, Santa Ana's National Guard unit. The location was identified as Pacific Beach by company historian Charles D. Swanner, the San Diego County community where the State Guard sometimes held training exercises. Company L's young "mascot," Neil Brock, is in the front row, second from the right.Individuals in a horse-drawn carriage in the background. Several structures also in the background. Co. L at Pacific Beach about 1895. Members of Company L and a boy are in a field in military uniforms and are carrying military gear and rifles. The boy who is second from the right in the front row is Neil Brock their mascot. The picture was given to Charles D. Swanner by Mrs. Neil Brock in 1962. One member of Company L is holding the United States flag. Horse carriages are in the background as well as elegant homes. Also pictured are Capt. S. H. Finley on the left and Lt. Parke S. Roper second from the left.
