From the Collection:

The collection consists of photographs taken between 1882 and 1953 of various exterior locations primarily in Orange County, California, including Santa Ana, Tustin, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Garden Grove, Orange, San Juan Capistrano, San Juan Hot Springs, and Irvine. There are also photographs of Catalina Island and Riverside. More than half of the photographs date to the period prior to 1900. The collection includes in most cases the glass plate or film negatives used to create the prints.

General

Interior of the Edgar Grocery Store, 114 E. Fourth Street. Proprietor George Edgar (1859-1933) is shown at right. He came to Santa Ana in 1883, and operated a grocery store at this location for almost fifty years. Notes on photo: Possibly George A. Edgar in photo who was the former mayor (1904-1908) of Santa Ana, CA. A merchant and on the Board of Trustees or Supervisors. Chamber of Commerce. Member of O.C Fair Association. Information obtained from Terry Garrett of Santa Ana, CA. A similiar photo is at American Title and Trust. A young girl and dog are also in the store, which has electricity, an icebox, and a telephone. Canned goods, brooms, breads,and laundry soap. In smaller photo: Boxes with swastika on the side are Snowflake crackers from the Pacicfic Coast Biscuit Co. Santa Ana, CA.
