General

Collection of photos and glass plate negatives of Gulick, Huntley, and Phelps families, whose ancestors moved from Plainsview, Illinois to Southern California in the late 19th century.

Edna Phelp's great-grandfather Martin Nickolas Gulick (1815-1900) married his first wife, Eleanor Welch (1820-1848) in 1841 and had three children, one of whom was Edna Phelps' grandmother, Mary Jane Gulick (1862-1919). After Eleanor Welch died in 1848, and Martin Gulick married a second time in 1850 to Jane Vanarsdall, who had no children and died in 1857.

Martin Gulick married a third time in 1860 to Annis Curtis Phelps (1827-1919) and had five daughters: Sadie, Alice, Olive (Ollie), Harreit (Hattie), and another who died in early childhood. Martin, Annis, Hattie and Olive Gulick, migrated from Plainsview, Illinois to Tustin, California in 1892. Alice Gulich married John B. Gooch, and migrated to California around the same time, settling in National City, California. Sadie Gulich was the last to migrate in 1900.

Alice Gulich Gooch, a photographer, is responsible for at least some of the glass plate negatives in the collection, depicting herself, her mother and sisters, and relative Laura "Lollie" Palmer.

Mary Jane Gulick (Edna Phelps' grandmother) married Louis Ransom Phelps (1835-1914), the half-brother of Annis C. Phelps, and the first of their twelve children was Ernest Phelps, Edna Phelps' father.
