General
The Ross family was the first to settle in what would become the city of Santa Ana. Having previously migrated from Illinois to Monterey, California by wagon train, in 1868 Jacob Ross Sr. purchased land from the Yorba family's Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana. In 1869, Jacob Ross Sr. sold roughly 75 acres to William H. Spurgeon, who would found the city of Santa Ana there.
The Ross family continued to live in the area, and Jacob Ross Sr.'s son, Jacob Ross Jr., was made supervisor of Los Angeles County in 1886, Supervisor of Orange County's Second District in 1889, and Orange County Assessor from 1891 to 1895.
