General
Writings regarding Maria Merced Rains, the daughter of Rancho Santa Ana del Chino owner Isaac Williams and granddaughter of Antonio Maria Lugo, owner of Rancho San Bernardino. In 1856, after her father's death, Merced married John Rains, who sold Merced's half of the Chino rancho and acquired Ranco Cucamonga.
In 1862, Rains was murdered, and Merced's brother-in-law Robert Carlisle coerced her into giving him power of attorney and control of her property. In 1865 Carlisle was killed in a feud over the property's ownership. In 1864, Merced married José Carrillo, but Rancho Cucamonga was sold to Isaias W. Hellman in 1871, and in 1876 Merced and her nine children (five with Rains, and four with Carillo) moved to Los Angeles.
