Biographical / Historical

Avram Davidson was born in Yonkers, New York, in a section called Hog Hill. He attended four colleges without receiving a degree. During 1941-1945 he served with the U. S. Navy as a hospital corpsman in the South Pacific and in China (an Oriental locale and mood figure in several of his stories, notably "Dagon," 1959; collected in Or All the Seas With Oysters, 1962) and then fought with the Israeli Army during 1948-1949. He has worked at a variety of odd jobs but has spent most of his life as a professional writer. In 1958 he won a Hugo Award for "Or All the Seas With Oysters" (1958; collected in Or All the Seas With Oysters). He also served as the executive editor of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction (1962-1964) and during that time edited three volumes of the magazine's annual "Best From" series. In 1963 he received another Hugo Award when his magazine was named Best Professional Magazine. Davidson has been nominated for several Nebula awards and has also won awards for his fantasy and mystery stories.
